Samsung Galaxy S & Tab official ICS update… Or no update?

Rumours that have suggested Samsung is working on delivering an Android ‘Value Pack’ update for Galaxy S smartphones have been dealt a blow after The Next Web was informed that there are no plans for its release.

At the end of December, Samsung explained that memory issues on the Galaxy range stopped the company from delivering an update for its older smartphones. The TouchWiz interface and Samsung Widgets were said to be unreliable on the ageing handset, helping Samsung make the decision not to update the Galaxy S.

Just a day later, it was reported that Samsung was reconsidering its decision not release an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update for the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, and was apparently readying a “Value Pack” that could deliver new features without a full rollout of the new Android software.

However, a Samsung spokesperson has said that the company will not offer the update due to the hardware specifications of the older Galaxy devices, in that they are limited to and fully optimised for the Gingerbread experience.

The news will frustrate Galaxy S owners that had gotten their hopes up following recent reports, with many still on a two-year contract, they were hoping to see new features on the device. That said, Samsung has begun to roll out Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Galaxy S II and is working to deliver upgrades for the Galaxy Note and its newer Galaxy Tab models.

Samsung Hires iPhone Advertising Model

Samsung Electronics has created a stir among techies with ads that look like a deliberate provocation to Apple. A girl who advertises Apple’s iPhone 4S now also appears in an ad for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet PC, which it started advertising at home and abroad last month. In the Samsung ad, the girl is seen using the gadget with her father.

In the Apple ad from last October, the iPhone 4S is used to take pictures of the same girl, which are then edited and transmitted.

Models who have advertised products of certain companies are usually kept out of advertising for rival brands. But IT website Techie said that Samsung deliberately mocks Apple by implying that even Apple’s advertising models can be won over to Samsung products.

Apple fans, a particularly committed breed, accuse Samsung of copying not just Apple’s designs but even its advertising.

Samsung denies it had any such intention. A spokesman for the firm said the girl was selected in an audition by “an overseas advertising firm” and Samsung had no idea she had advertised Apple

Last year, Samsung also stirred up trouble with an ad showing a queue of customers waiting to buy a new iPhone wowed after seeing someone else use a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE. A worldwide legal battle between the two companies continues.

Facebook Messenger client for Windows slips out for download, and it’s now officially available for download.

It seems that there was a leaked version of Facebook Messenger for Windows earlier but it’s now officially available for download.

Do take note however, that the application requires you to have Windows 7.

Currently, Facebook is considering it as a trial application. The features include:

  • Chat and message with your friends on Facebook
  • See the latest updates from your friends in ticker
  • Get quick notifications about what’s going on

Good news for Facebook addicts who’s still stuck using a desktop system in today’s mobile age.

But if you’re like me who likes to keep things simple and easy, Pidgin can also let you do the same, while at the same time, lets you log into your Google Talk account, Windows Live chat and even your ICQ account if you still use it. Best of all, it’s a very small program which takes almost no resource and works on Windows XP, Mac and Linux.

EV Chargers Coming To Japanese Gas Stations

Starting early next year, 27 gas stations across both Tokyo and the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan will be outfitted with electric vehicle charging stations.

Four oil companies are teaming up for the project — including JX Nippon Oil, Idemitsu Kosan Co, Cosmo Oil Co,. and Showa Shell Sekiyu KK — and the stations are expected to be in place by early 2012. The collaborative project is known as the EV Service Station Network.

For a fixed monthly fee — approximately US$38 — EV owners can charge their vehicles at any of the 27 locations. And according to Green Car Congress, the stations will also provide additional, as-of-yet unnamed, services for consumers while they wait for the charge to finish.

Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab Might get ICS upgrades after all

If you are an owner of the Samsung Galaxy S or the Galaxy Tab, you might have been disappointed by the news that Samsung won’t be upgrading the 2 devices with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Their reason being that those devices simply does not have enough memory capacity for the upgrade.

However, due to much public demands, the company is now claiming that they will try to find ways to include the upgrade into the 2 devices. This is not much of a promise but it gives the users hope.

China now has its own GPS

China has its own GPS now and it’s called Beidou (北斗)
This means that China is now one step closer to become the top economic and military superpower in the world.

Why is this important? Accurately knowing where you are on planet Earth is one of the most powerful technologies any country can have. Take the US military targeting accuracy and airline services for example, those are all well established and very successful powers partly thanks to GPS system.

Beidou cuts China’s dependency of the American GPS system completely. It means that they would be able to launch any attack and move their forces around the world without any US interference. Right now, the United States can deactivate their Global Positioning System so nobody can use it in certain areas. That includes enemy armies. After Beidou, however, this will be impossible.

But how accurate is Beidou? Civilian transports would be able to know where they are within a range of 10 meters. They would also be able to record speed with a 0.2 metres-per-second error margin and synchronize their clocks with an accuracy of 0.02 millionths of a second. This is way better than the United States’ GPS system, which has an accuracy of 20 meters (66 ft). Garmin claims that their receivers are accurate to within 15 meters on average, which is worse than the accuracy claimed by the Chinese.

Like GPS, Beidou has two modes: civilian and military. The Chinese military will have even more accuracy. They haven’t disclosed by how much.

The US military and other agencies use augmentation systems that provide higher accuracy. GPS.gov claims that “these enable real-time positioning to within a few centimeters, and post-mission measurements at the millimeter level.” Right now, the Air Force and Lockheed Martin are working on GPS III. It will greatly increase accuracy while giving a stronger signal, harder to jam and capable of penetrating areas in which the current GPS doesn’t work.

Right now Beidou have ten geo-positioning satellites in orbit covering China. By 2012 they will have 16 to cover most of Asia and, by 2020, they will cover the entire world with 35 satellites. That means that their navy, planes and land troops would know where they are in any part of the world without depending on the American GPS.

China will be able to move their civilian transport ships and airplanes all over the world without being dependent on any other country. Their military would also use this system to direct their ships, combat airplanes, drones and land forces in battle.

They would also be able to use Beidou to target any kind of weapons with great accuracy, including cruise missiles.

Apart from the Chinese military, their economic system will have a big boost thanks to Beidou. According to the head of the project talking to China Daily, it “will create a market as big as 400 billion yuan ($61.54 billion) by the end of 2020.” The Chinese government is investing $25 billion on it. Although it is claimed to be operational only now, the system was actually used during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake to gather and provide information regarding the earthquake affected areas.

According to Beidou, their system will be compatible with the American GPS, the Russian Glonass—which is also fully operative—and the European Galileo.

I want this in my kitchen!

Some guy (Dutchman Pascal) created a computer hooked up to his wall in his kitchen. Installed with with Windows XP and used an LCARS theme. For those who don’t know what LCARS is, I recommend watching Star Trek – The next generation or Star Trek – Voyager.

While the computer doesn’t replicate food, keep track of crew members around the house or issue red alert signals, it helps to keep track of the guy’s train schedules, calendar, music, torrents, etc…

Not really Trekkie but still cool!

YES 4G launched, experiences downtime and says sorry.

Yes 4G, the anticipated new telco/internet company was officially launched last Friday. Everyone (or at least everyone not satisfied with all current existing companies) hoped that YTL will bring better services and better price to the masses. Finally, affordable broadband?

Yes? Actually, NO! During the launch day, YTL announced that their service will cost 9 cents for every 3mb, 1 minute talk time or per sms. Yes also offers up to 30% rebate to power users who consume high amounts of data. This effectively reduces the rates to as low as 2 cents per MB or RM20 per GB.

This means, if you usually use 10GB monthly (like I do), you’d be spending around RM 200 monthly! To me, that’s more robbery then a good way to attract new customers in a country with more then 4 major ISPs already.

YTL better come out with new packages soon to cater for home users who need unlimited downloads.

Okay, so just 1 day after the launch of their services, their website went down for a whole day and there’s no way to access their website. They claimed that it was hacked. I’d expected as much but being an experienced company, one should already expected such a thing should happen.

So finally, YTL offered 10GB for free for their new users and pre-ordered users as a apology for their downtime.

All these events isn’t good news for YTL. I was hoping they’d kicked the other ISP’s butts but looks like there wasn’t much to hope for.

A toilet that checks your health

Would you like a toilet that tells you if you’re healthy or not every time you take a dump? Japan’s leading toilet maker, Toto did just that. The “intelligent toilet” has a built in scale on the floor, and armband to check your blood pressure and a receptacle to collect and analyze your urine sample.

The information will be sent to your computer, which you can then email the data to your doctor.

Japan is already a country with the most advanced toilet technology ranging from sound and smell management and automatic cleaning systems. This toilet will sure add to their profile. I wonder if they might create a toilet with a built in fridge so we can eat some ice-cream while doing our “business”.
