Honda scraps over 1000 cars affected by Thailand flood

Honda Automobile (Thailand) has kicked off a major program to scrap a total of 1055 cars that were affected by the flood in its plant in central Thailand, the company announced on Tuesday.

The cars involved are Brio, Jazz, City, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Freed. “We made every effort to protect our plant, but with the massive amount of flood water.. 1055 vehicles that remained in the plant were finally damaged by the flood,” Pitak Pruittisarikorn, executive vice president of Honda Thailand, told a press conference.

On-site demonstrations showed that the specialist workers hired by Honda to dismantle the cars first, drain the remaining liquids from the engine and then dissemble the car by delicate steps. Finally, the skeleton of the car was lifted by a crane into a gigantic mobile pressing machine which turned it into a compressed cube for recycling purposes.

According to Pitak, the process of scrapping the cars, which is expected to be finished within one month, had stringent controls to ensure that it was done in an environmentally- responsible way.

The program was a reflection of Honda’s commitment to delivering the “highest quality” to its customers, Pitak added, ” We will not sell any of the damaged cars to customers, or reuse any of the parts”.

To ensure transparency, the vehicle identification numbers of all the cars will be made public on the website of Honda (Thailand) .

China now has its own GPS

China has its own GPS now and it’s called Beidou (北斗)
This means that China is now one step closer to become the top economic and military superpower in the world.

Why is this important? Accurately knowing where you are on planet Earth is one of the most powerful technologies any country can have. Take the US military targeting accuracy and airline services for example, those are all well established and very successful powers partly thanks to GPS system.

Beidou cuts China’s dependency of the American GPS system completely. It means that they would be able to launch any attack and move their forces around the world without any US interference. Right now, the United States can deactivate their Global Positioning System so nobody can use it in certain areas. That includes enemy armies. After Beidou, however, this will be impossible.

But how accurate is Beidou? Civilian transports would be able to know where they are within a range of 10 meters. They would also be able to record speed with a 0.2 metres-per-second error margin and synchronize their clocks with an accuracy of 0.02 millionths of a second. This is way better than the United States’ GPS system, which has an accuracy of 20 meters (66 ft). Garmin claims that their receivers are accurate to within 15 meters on average, which is worse than the accuracy claimed by the Chinese.

Like GPS, Beidou has two modes: civilian and military. The Chinese military will have even more accuracy. They haven’t disclosed by how much.

The US military and other agencies use augmentation systems that provide higher accuracy. GPS.gov claims that “these enable real-time positioning to within a few centimeters, and post-mission measurements at the millimeter level.” Right now, the Air Force and Lockheed Martin are working on GPS III. It will greatly increase accuracy while giving a stronger signal, harder to jam and capable of penetrating areas in which the current GPS doesn’t work.

Right now Beidou have ten geo-positioning satellites in orbit covering China. By 2012 they will have 16 to cover most of Asia and, by 2020, they will cover the entire world with 35 satellites. That means that their navy, planes and land troops would know where they are in any part of the world without depending on the American GPS.

China will be able to move their civilian transport ships and airplanes all over the world without being dependent on any other country. Their military would also use this system to direct their ships, combat airplanes, drones and land forces in battle.

They would also be able to use Beidou to target any kind of weapons with great accuracy, including cruise missiles.

Apart from the Chinese military, their economic system will have a big boost thanks to Beidou. According to the head of the project talking to China Daily, it “will create a market as big as 400 billion yuan ($61.54 billion) by the end of 2020.” The Chinese government is investing $25 billion on it. Although it is claimed to be operational only now, the system was actually used during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake to gather and provide information regarding the earthquake affected areas.

According to Beidou, their system will be compatible with the American GPS, the Russian Glonass—which is also fully operative—and the European Galileo.

Migrated

Moved from Exabytes to share a hosting package with my friend at another web host. This is because I seldom update my blog and there isn’t a lot of visitors anyway so paying for a premium service isn’t required. I now only needed a cheap but stable host to host my existing blog.

The move was simple, thanks to WordPress’ structure. All I need to do is to move the files, the database, and changed some settings all in 1 page only.

It took around 24 hours for my domain name to point to this new nameserver and now here we are!

ASLR PLS WTF OMGBBQ ME GUSTA

You know, I thought I’d thought when the internet came into my life, life would change from being non-connected to connected. That means I could install MIRC and ask anyone with a female nick ASLR wanna meet?

Who would have known the internet changed so much in the past decade? The first big change for me was instant messaging. IRC was so troublesome that you never know people was trying to talk to you unless you were in the IRC window. And you’ll never know if your friend is online or not in IRC until you search the channel and didn’t see their usual nick.

ICQ was invented and it was cool. Everyone was introducing themselves and exchanging ICQ numbers in school then. Who didn’t have ICQ then was equivalent to who didn’t use Facebook now.

Then there was this time when MSN came out, broadband was introduced to Malaysia and everyone can spend a lot of time visiting and posting in online forums. That was the time when people started posting things like WTF? OMG! LOL!. Those ASL, BRB, AFK stuff was slowly fading away into memories.

After awhile, simply posting stuff like WTF became lame and you’d probably seen words like WTFOMGBBQ! posted somewhere before in the forums. I never bother to find out what it actually meant and why they wanted to post such lame words. But to them, people who don’t understand those words are fresh to the internet.

Then came 9gag… That’s probably when I decided that the internet has been taken over by aliens and slowly brain washing every internet users to speak their language. Because this time, their posts are not limited to chat rooms or forums only, there are all over the blogs, social networks, forums, and even stage shows in public…

WTF?

New Job, New environment, new type of stress

It was a good thing that I left my previous company a while ago to join the company I am in now. As the service engineer in the previous company, I was required to do almost everything to help the customer get their machine working fine and also to earn money for the company by quoting them parts and for the service.

However, as easy as it may sound, the problems we often encounter isn’t really nice to deal with. Many company will want you to stick around no matter how long it takes till their machine is running and also only one person needs to handle the whole northern part of Malaysia. They were really lacking manpower and couldn’t hire fast enough or offer good enough package to increase their headcount.

Worse still, the environment is totally negative with everyone not happy about the management.

In my current company, things are different. I don’t have to run around any more. My job is to sit around the lab to create test programs which interacts with testers written by other engineers in the same lab. It’s my first time working labview with HEX codes but that’s the challenge I have to overcome. Once I know how to work with all those micro controllers, everything should be much more easier.

Now the stress is to learn the system and also to handle the extreme quietness and seriousness of the working environment.

Of course, working 4 months as a service engineer means I got to travel and relax a lot while it’s a totally different story here. It’s work from 8.30am till 6pm with 1 hour lunch in between. Also, most of the time, everyone usually leaves work later then 6pm, So that’s almost 9 hours work time daily.

I’m probably sticking around though, and to see how much I can learn from here, then I can take this knowledge to somewhere with better offer or to create my own product.

Something Broke

Something in this website broke and it has happened for quite awhile now. I didn’t actually realized the problem until recently. For the past 4 months, I have been on a new job which practically took plenty of my time away and it wasn’t even a very pleasant job. It’s not really that rewarding either.

But anyway, I found a new job now and resigning from my current job. There’s only 2 more days left I need to stick to this job. Many people said that working in the service line gives them more freedom and time but that’s what I found not true.

For this website, I had to delete my website and restore it again. The database is intact but all my files were deleted. I will probably need to restore them back again when I’m free and when the internet is working properly on my side.

Is this stress?

It’s been really warm these few days. Add that, with a bunch of things to do, work needed some rush to complete, new job coming soon and exams next week. I’ve also got a slight sore through and my whole body is aching. Lots of sleep over the weekends isn’t helping with my tiredness at all.

And with all that I hope is over soon, I’ll have some free time to think about what I want to do with my free time. Do I want to continue making myself busy or take some time off to laze around a few weeks first? If only I can just fork out RM5000 for a Full Day Spa Package with my girl. But after all these hard work, I’ll still won’t have enough. That’s what I’ve been rewarded for working in the same company for 6 years. So it’s called a Multinational Company and now wants to convert me to permanent only after I wanted to leave. Screw them even if I think the offer is more tempting than where I’m going to work. They don’t deserve efficiency and accuracy. All they need is stone age style of corporate management and hope their product will be great when it reaches the market.

As for what I’ll do without the $$$ to spend for some relaxation? Maybe a day spa will be satisfying enough? Maybe a short trip to a cheap Hill top casino resort?

There are still so many things I want to do. Upgrade my computer, fix my car, change my phone, get a new camera and start my own side business.

I have too many short term goals and long term goals which I haven’t even started yet.

Is this called stress?

It’s Friday Friday… Tomorrow anyway…

Rebecca Black – Friday

This is a viral video posted on YouTube which got plenty of UNLIKE(S). The song is about… Friday and it basically describes what Friday is all about. The lyrics are lame and the video was erm. could be better.

But what hit me was why people actually make such a big fuss about hating Rebecca Black? Is the song or the video that bad? It’s lame, but it’s catchy.

If you want to know what a bad, lame and pointless video is, try watching a naked girl falling down the stairs.

Getting a DSLR

I’ve been joining several photography events for a while now. But I’m mostly just a participant with interest but couldn’t really do anything much since I don’t actually own my own DSLR. There’s only so much you can do with a point and shoot camera and it really sucks not being able to do the things the other photographers can do with their DSLR.

After awhile, I’ve decided that I should probably get myself a proper DSLR too. So I’ve been looking around for a good unit around my budget. 2 camera which caught my attention was the new Canon EOS 600D and the Sony Alpha SLT-A33. Both of them are around the range of RM2500 depending on the kit lenses and accessories packaged with the camera.

They both takes full HD videos and also produce great quality images. While the Sony is cheaper, lighter and generally produce better quality pictures, the Canon has better functions for taking videos and has a wider choice of accessories and lenses available in my country. There’s also lots of events I can attend to free if I use a Canon so the choice are both generally quite equal.

However, since I’m going to change jobs soon, it’s better that I hold on to that thought for a little while longer and maybe wait for the new Sony A77 and the EOS 650D.

Does anyone has any advice or comments on my choice?
