Most of the time, when someone mentions they want to eat Japanese food, the first few things which comes to mind are food such as Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Tako or Teriyaki based food. Actually, there are a lot more to Japanese food then those popular stuff. If that’s all the Japanese eat daily then they will get sick really fast. Also, do feel like trying out to cook some of those food myself. Perhaps I’ll try with some simple dishes such as these.
- おこのみやき (Okonomiyaki)
![]()
Okonomiyaki is a Japanese dish consisting of a pan-fried batter cake and various ingredients. Okonomi means “what you like” or “what you want”, and yaki means “grilled” or “cooked”. Thus, the name of this dish means “cook what you like”. However, most of the time, you’ll when asked, you’ll be shown that the most popular ingredient used in okonomiyaki is cabbages. Most of the time, the cabbage is first marinated in some batter such as teriyaki or normal corn starch. Eggs can be used as well and certainly, this looks easy enough for someone like me to try it out soon.
- たまごやき (Tamagoyaki)
Tamagoyaki is a type of a Japanese omelette or also called sweet egg roll. Sometimes, you find them on top of sushi and sometimes, inside noodles. But Tamagoyaki by itself can be delicious if cooked right. Basically, you mix all the seasoning into the eggs, beat them and instead of frying the whole thing on the pan in one shot, you cook them in layers by slowly rolling the egg over or folding them.
